Full conference agenda

Michael Siviter, Mercia Group

Michael will set the scene for the conference  and outline the challenges of managing your team in a remote environment. He will review the ‘performance essentials’ and how these have been impacted by the pandemic and how our management styles have had to evolve to cater for our teams’ and clients’ changing needs. He will also consider how the lessons learned during these times can be leveraged for future benefit.

Alan Kennedy

As a new manager one of the opportunities that will come to you is the opportunity to deal more with clients, prospective clients or potential referral sources. If you do this well it can have long term benefits for your career, your firm’s prosperity and your relationships with others.

Alan Kennedy will use all his 38 years’ experience to teach you the who, where, how and what of brand building for new managers in today’s virtual environment so that you can be confident your brand is being developed for the benefit of your stakeholders.

Philip Partington, JMW Solicitors LLP

One of the biggest challenges for new managers is aligning all of their different stakeholders’ needs. Building a strong relationship with your manager and communicating effectively with them is key to your continued success in your role. It is vital that you are able to anticipate your manager’s needs and understand their objectives, especially if you want them to buy into your ideas.

You will need to build trust, respect and demonstrate your competence and follow through with what you say you will do, whilst juggling all of your other priorities. During this session, Philip will share how he has effectively managed upwards in his legal career both internally within legal practice and also with superiors within the court systems.

Emma Elliott, James Cowper Kreston

For most experienced managers, the challenges faced during their first management position will be a distant memory. In this session, Emma will discuss her experiences as a new manager, the steps she took to overcome the challenges, the support she received to make the transition, and how to apply the advice and learning received to help you on your management journey.

John Sharkey, Mercia Group

John will discuss the types of pressure that managers are facing both in and out of the workplace and provide some strategies to cope with these demands. He will also identify how we can maintain our resilience through improved thinking, assertive communication and self-care.

Michael Siviter & John Sharkey, Mercia Group

During this interactive session, Michael and John will introduce you to the Social Styles Framework which will help you to better understand and manage the differing preferences of colleagues and clients.

They will share practical tips and techniques to help you build better relationships and there will be an opportunity to apply these skills in a simulated environment.
