Jonathan Main, MHA Moore and Smalley

Jonathan will provide details of the most topical VAT and indirect tax issues in the healthcare sector.

This will certainly encompass primary care networks, but in addition the wider healthcare marketplace with a particular focus on issues arising from the UK’s response to Covid and our departure from the EU.


Paul Gordon, MacArthur Gordon

In this session we will look at the complexity of the NHS Pension, the interaction of the Annual Allowance and Lifetime Allowance particularly in light of the Budget announcement confirming the LTA will be frozen, along with areas for you and your clients to consider when they review retirement and potential return.

Paul will outline the 1995, 2008 and 2015 Sections of the Scheme along with their peripheral benefits and the implications of the McCloud Response regarding the age discrimination case for those automatically transferred to the 2015 Section based on age alone.

Conference speakers


Deborah is the current Chairman of the Moore and Smalley partnership and leads the firm’s specialist healthcare services department.

She has specialised in looking after Healthcare Professional clients for over 30 years and is invited to speak at seminars across the country to doctors, their practice managers and fellow accountants on a wide variety of financial management topics affecting the sector. She contributes articles and comments to the Medical Press on a regular basis.

Deborah is also Chairman of The Association of Independent Specialist Medical Accountants (AISMA) and a former President of the North West Society of Chartered Accountants.


Sally Sidaway is a Director of Medical Accounting at RSM Tax and Accounting Limited. She has over 18 years experience  of looking after the accounts, taxation and superannuation affairs of a wide range of GP practices and other medical clients. Sally is nominated specialist for RSM Southampton office within the AISMA organisation and sits on the Medical Specialist Interest Committee of ICAEW.


Paul is a partner in our Commercial Property department and also leads Napthens’ Healthcare department. He joined Napthens in 2016 having spent 17 years at a leading healthcare firm in Manchester where he trained and became a Partner. 

Paul acts for a number of  GP practices on a wide range of legal issues – from new premises developments to property sales to dealing with the property issues when partners leave or join a practice.   Paul also acts for GP Alliances and Federations as well as several NHS trusts.

His role also includes the supervision and development of more junior members of the team. Paul is recommended by the legal industry 'bible', Legal 500.


Jonathan joined MHA Moore and Smalley as a Partner in 2018. He qualified with the Chartered Institute of Taxation as a chartered tax adviser in 1994 and as an accredited mediator with the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution in 2016. To ensure that we continue to provide the best advice to our clients following the UK’s departure from the EU, Jonathan is currently studying for the Level 3 Certificate in International Trade with The Institute of Export & International Trade. He has more than thirty years’ experience of indirect taxation, including time spent as a Partner with both Arthur Andersen and PwC. During his time with PwC, Jonathan was Senior Partner for PwC’s Liverpool office.

In addition to Jonathan’s experience within professional services, he has also served as the finance lead on the Board of Trustees at Culture Warrington.


Paul is a Medical Specialist Chartered Financial Adviser at MacArthur Gordon. Paul’s role is split between advising clients, speaking and assisting other advisory firms regarding their clients and the NHS Pension. He regularly liaises with the NHS Pensions Agency, medical specialist accountants, medical specialist solicitors and HMRC to ensure continued understanding of all aspects of the on-going changes that could impact clients.


Bob is a tax partner with MHA MacIntyre Hudson and is the Head of Tax Training at MacIntyre Hudson Advisory Services LLP. He has a wide range of tax knowledge and lectures on a range of subjects, including specialisms in a number of industries such as solicitors, farmers and the medical profession. Bob has written a Tax Procedures Manual and has regularly contributed to articles on technical tax subjects. He continues to be involved with clients on both a consultancy and portfolio basis.


Alan is a Chartered Accountant and partner in UNW LLP chartered accountants where he is head of the Dental Business Unit which looks after over 400 dentist clients. Alan writes regularly for the dental press, and presents at BDA seminars.

He is a member of the National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants & Lawyers (NASDAL) and a member of the technical committee, and chair of the NHS Superannuation committee. He is also a member of the Association of Specialist Providers to Dentistry (ASPD). Alan is the editor of the quarterly NASDAL goodwill survey which analyses all member client practice sales, purchases, and valuations.
